Managing a hockey team — whether it's a youth travel squad, an adult recreational league, or a competitive club — comes with responsibilities that go well beyond scheduling ice time and ordering jerseys. One of the most overlooked responsibilities is making sure your team has the right insurance in place.

Why Hockey Teams Need Insurance

Hockey is a contact sport played on a hard surface with sticks, pucks, and boards. Injuries happen. Equipment gets damaged. And when something goes wrong, someone is going to ask who is responsible.

Without proper insurance, a team manager or organization could be personally liable for medical costs, legal fees, or property damage claims. The right insurance coverage protects the team, the players, and the people running the organization.

Core Coverages for Hockey Teams

General Liability Insurance

General liability is the foundation of any team insurance program. It covers third-party bodily injury and property damage claims — meaning if a spectator is injured at your game, or if your team accidentally damages a rink facility, your general liability policy responds.

Most rinks and tournament organizers require proof of general liability coverage before allowing teams to participate. A standard limit of $1,000,000 per occurrence / $2,000,000 aggregate is typically sufficient for most amateur teams.

Accident Medical Coverage

Accident medical coverage (also called sports accident insurance) pays for medical expenses when a player is injured during a covered activity — practice, games, or team travel. This coverage fills the gap between a player's personal health insurance and the actual cost of treatment.

For youth teams especially, accident medical coverage is essential. Parents expect that if their child is injured at a team event, there is a safety net in place.

Directors & Officers (D&O) Liability

If your team is organized as a nonprofit or association, D&O coverage protects board members and officers from personal liability arising from decisions made on behalf of the organization. This is particularly important for booster clubs, youth hockey associations, and travel team organizations.

Equipment Coverage

Hockey equipment is expensive. A team bag full of goalie gear alone can represent thousands of dollars in value. Equipment coverage protects against theft, loss, and damage to team-owned gear.

What About Individual Player Coverage?

Individual players are typically covered under the team's accident medical policy during team activities. However, players should also review their personal health insurance to understand how it coordinates with team coverage.

Some leagues and associations — including USA Hockey — include basic accident medical coverage as part of membership. Always verify what is included before assuming coverage exists.

Getting the Right Coverage for Your Team

Every team is different. A youth mite team has different exposures than an adult beer league squad or a competitive junior program. Working with an insurance specialist who understands hockey is the best way to make sure you have the right coverage at the right price.

At State of Hockey Insurance, we specialize in coverage for hockey players, teams, facilities, and organizations across 22 states. We understand the sport and the unique risks that come with it.
